With the mushroom industry booming, mushroom waste (MW) disposal has become an important issue for growers. If MW could not be disposed correctly, for example, thrown away or stacked, this not only squander resource, but also breed mildew and pests and pollute environment. MW is a remaining material after mushroom harvest, with abundant content of protein and other nutrients, and has a higher usage value in agricultural production. After many years of scientific research, it is concluded that MW can be reused to cultivate mushroom. Its main utilization routes are stated as follows:
Ⅰ,After dried, crushed, and then added 30% new materials, MW sourced from Straw Mushroom,Oyster Mushroom, Shiitake, and Black Fungus cultivation materials in which mycelium grew better and no bacterial pollution was found, could be used to cultivate Shaggy Mane, with the consequences of considerable benefit, cost reduction and high availability on raw materials.
Ⅱ,MW application in mushroom seed technology
MW is a good raw material for cultivating Aaricus Mushroom in stead of wheat seed.
Ⅲ,MW application in livestock and poultry feed
MW contains abundant amino acids, trace element ( Fe, Ca, Zn, Mg, et al.), with an unique mushroom flavor and a good palatability, so MW is very suitable as feed.
Ⅳ,MW application as manure
Moldy MW is not suitable as secondary cultivation materials or animal feed, however, it is suitable as manure. MW has a sufficient content of organic-matter and mineral elements among which N, P, K contents are higher than these in fresh manure and straw. After MW application in soil, it is helpful to form soil humus with good ventilation and high moisture capacity , improving soil fertility. Some kinetin and special enzymes secreted from mushroom mycelium can break down complex organic matter into nutrients easily absorbed by plants.
MW applied deeply in orchard can increase soil fertility, improve fruit quality, with the results of increased harvest and income. There are also good effects for MW application in vegetables and flowers.
Ⅴ, MW used as fuel
Because most Shiitake cultivation material is sawdust, dried Shiitake waste has the best effect as fuel.
1, MW used as sterilization fuel
2, MW used for methane production
3, MW used as heating fuel in mushroom room
Ⅵ, MW replacing cover soil when vegetable seedling-cultivating
After treatment with hot steam and other physical approach, MW can be used as cover material on the seeds when vegetable seedling-cultivating, which can effectively reduce or eliminate the root rot, damping-off and other diseases.
Ⅶ, MW used for extracting hormone and pesticide
Extracted hormone and antibiotic components from Oyster mushroom scraps can be used to produce stimulation hormone and antibiotics.
Ⅷ, MW used as insects feed
Mushroom scraps are centrally composted, due to humidity increase, breeding a lot of grubs and other insects, these insects are used to feed catfish, other fish or chickens, which can save a lot of fodder investment, reducing cost, meanwhile, fed fish and chickens have large size and fatty body with high nutritional value.
