Cave-mode mushroom cultivation achieves turning waste into wealth

Since this year, Vegetable Development Center of Zichang County, Shanxi Province of China has been fiercely innovating the development mode of vegetable and effectively integrating resources.
With advantaged goodness of “warm in winter and cold in summer,” cave-mode mushroom cultivation has been vigorously promoted, which effectively lifts final output while reducing costs. Meanwhile, waste fruit branches are reused as raw ingredients for mushroom cultivation, which also exploits another prosperous road for growers.
Zichang County is located in middle part of Chinese Loess Plateau, in the past, most of local people live in caves, along with the development of economy, more and more people are going out of the country and moving into new cities, old caves are hence left unused.
“I own two caves, one is used for cultivation of 650 sticks of Oyster mushrooms while 670 Shiitake sticks are absorbed in another cave, last month, mushrooms cultivated from the caves were sold out with the market price of 2-8 CNY per kg, annual gross incomes could reach over 20,000 CNY via mushroom cultivation,” introduces one of mushroom growers passionately, adding that caves are warm in winter and cold in summer, which fits for growth requirement of mushrooms and hence fruiting amount could be increased.
