The “rotten sticks” in Shiitake

The phenomenon of “rotten stick” is always happen in cultivating Shiitake, so why this kind of phenomenon happens? “rotten stick” is a kind of rotten disease during the period of spawn-cultivating and fruiting on bag Shiitake cultivation. Usually, it forms plaques on part of surface, then spread into whole mushroom stick. In early stage, injured part gradually impaired and has slimy black excretion and other mold layers. Along with the aggravation of injured degree, compost will become black, soft and rotten. In late period, mushroom stick will become water solution loose, rotten for the increasing aqueous solution, compost presents the shape of black mud and has special stink.
1. The time of “rotten stick”, it will happen from spawn-running to some extent. In general, the phenomenon is not serious in early stage, but will become serious in middle and late stage.
2. There are some reasons for “rotten stick”: 
A. Improper preparation of compost, uneven material-mixing, excessive additives such as urea, superphosphate, gypsum and lime.
B. Poor ventilation in cultivation room, high concentration of Carbon dioxide and Oxygen are not enough, which influence the growth of spawn.
C. Too high temperature in cultivation room and exceed the suitable temperature range of Shiitake.
D. Direct sunlight, strong ultraviolet ray burns spawn in mushroom bags, part of mushroom bag appears yellow water and affect ventilation.
E. Too high humidity in fruiting environment, the water temperature is too high when moisturizing, excess moisturizing.
F. Untimely mushroom root-cleaning after picking, unskilled mushroom pickers bring a large piece of compost when picking mushroom, which result in the damage of spawns and after spraying water, it will be easier to breed mildew and result in “rotten stick”.
